Free Classifieds: Everything you need to know.

By Alex Wu

Free classifieds are adverts placed either online or in newspapers. If you have something to sell then they are the best way to inform your target audience about it. Only those people who are interested in your product will click the link or pick up the phone to contact you.

In the past, car boot sales provided the ideal venue for some sellers. Perhaps, you could even sell to your friends and family. But, since the internet has become so easily available it is possible to find hundreds of different sites offering these services.

But which one to choose? A quick search of Google can reveal hundreds of potential websites. If you pick the wrong one, or one where your advert will not be seen by the right people, then all your effort could be in vain. Its really important to plan properly before you take action.

What is it that you are selling? Is it Aunty Mable's old painting that you have no space for? Can you post it to the buyer? Could they come to collect it? Or it could be your own website that you want to promote. You could advertise the services on your website in a classified advert. Sometimes it is possible to even add your own links. When you are clear about these details, then you can proceed to pick the classified directory that is right for your particular type of item or service.

In an online auction, you can only advertise your item once and then wait for the buyers to come and bid for it. You may not get the price you want, and you will have to wait until the auction closes in 5 or 7 days to sell your item. But not so with classifieds! You can advertise in many different venues at once and the buyers can contact you straight away. It is possible that you could make a sale on the same day as your advert appears!

If you want people to come to you to collect your items then it is probably best to advertise in a local website, maybe your local paper has a website. If you have a service, of course, then you can advertise anywhere in the world. Both eBay and Craigslist have sections where you can advertise. Your perfect target audience is waiting to see what you have on offer.

Sometimes you have to register to place an advert. It is probably a good idea to be ready with a separate email address. After all, you don't want potential buyers trying to contact you at the same email address as your friends and family. Then you can use that address to register with as many different places as you want.

Actually, I have never been happier. I sold lots of things using classified adverts. I wrote a clear description of my things and included a phone number or email address so that people can contact me. I always look at other adverts for the same things to see how much other people are selling their stuff for and put my stuff on for roughly the same amount. And then I sit back and wait for the cash to roll in! - 15246
