Foods in Fairs and Festivals

By Sam Weyland

If there's one thing I'm good at besides my line of work, it's cooking. I've always loved reading my mother's cookbooks, listening to the sizzle of the saut?, and even the mishaps one finds very difficult to avoid. Cooking relaxes me, and nothing beats the feeling that you get when you see the food that you cooked being heartily consumed.

A few days ago, I met up with an old officemate of mine who have since made a living as an entrepreneur. He had remembered how I once cooked the food for an office gathering and he wanted to ask a favor. Basically, he pitched an idea to me about me adding in some food to complement a booth he was going to set up at a fair. His idea was selling cold fruitshakes, which was pretty fun. I was on leave, so I decided I'd give it a try.

Now, what do you pair with fruitshakes? Most will definitely work with fruitshakes, but is there anything that would work with them in particular? I browsed through the inherited cookbooks in my kitchen, and after a while got to thinking that I took on more than I could handle. Most of the food ideas in my head weren't a good idea for food stalls in a fair. And burgers, while a practical choice, was nothing too special.

And then it hit me: The perfect complement to my friend's fruitshakes would be something spicy! So instead of just preparing burgers as I originally resigned into doing, I decided to try dig out my mother's old chili recipe, and began preparing those in earnest. After that, I planned the most devious of dishes; the chiliburger.

But then, it would've been weird to have chiliburgers and fruitshakes in the same stall, though. So I approached my friend again and told him about an idea I had. Suppose he set me up with my own booth but still in close proximity to his? He liked the idea well enough, and soon I was talking to the event organizers to have my own booth. - 15246
