As I look back, I realize I wouldn't be into this hobby had it not been for my father. Way back, while most of his friends were into sports and the like, my dad decided to try a hand at something pretty unique. Now, when my dad decides to do something, he does it. So he went out and bought materials for glass blowing.

I remember my mom being a bit irate at my dad because of that. Glass blowing isn't exactly the safest hobby out there, and with all the heat involved in it, my mom didn't want my dad doing something potentially hazardous. But, after reading extensively about glassblowing, he persuaded my mom to let him try it out. My mom rationalized that he'd get bored with it sooner or later. It wasn't like he'd be able to make a living from it.

While my dad went about his glass blowing hobby, I wanted to watch, only to be halted by my mom. She didn't allow me to go near my dad while he handled the equipment, so I had to content myself with small glimpses every now and then. During the first few months, all I saw were my dad's first shaky attempts at glass blowing. But he was improving every time he tried.

After my constant whining and begging got to her, my mom finally consented to let me watch my dad doing his craft. At first, she was always present, nervous and skeptical about what my dad was doing and with me close by. Presently, she left us alone to go about her other chores.

This was when my dad, seeing my interest, let me help once in a while. Initially, he just asked for minor assistance setting up the equipment before a project, but I slowly progressed til I became a sort of apprentice to him. And this is how I got started glass blowing and eventually began selling my crafts at fairs and festivals. - 15246

Servicing My Foot Control On Your Sewing Machine

Modern sewing machines use electricity to power the sewing machine. This power is channeled to the machine through an electrical cord plugged into the wall socket. This cord is designed in series with a sewing machine foot control which is actually a variable on off switch. Press down on the foot control and the electricity causes the sewing machine to operate. A slight push down results in a slow start and go. The firmer the push the faster the sewing machine sews.

A properly working foot pedal enables you to created wonders with your sewing machine.

The sewing machine pedal may be a resistance device, an electronic device, or a air pressure device. Each one works differently. Associated problems are specific to the type of device.

A resistance pedal uses a Bakelite or other resistance material and slides a connector over it from less to greater resistance. The typical problems associated with resistance foot controls include cracks in the Bakelite, shorts in the connective wires, and wear of mechanical parts in the pedal.

Integrated circuits, capacitors, and resistors are used in electronic pedals to control voltage to the sewing machine. Typical problems can involve electrical contact, shorts, and surges causing the electronic devices to fail.

Is there any sound at all from my foot control or from my sewing machine? If there is no sound, that is good. If I hear a popping or crackling sound, unplug it immediately. If I shake my sewing machine pedal, do we hear anything rattling inside?

When you service a sewing machine, one of the primary diagnostic tools at your disposal is listening. Hum, buzz, crackle, rattle, and pop are bad sounds that indicated broken or worn parts inside the foot control. Failure of the sewing machine to operate can be an indication of electrical breakdown.

The back of resistance pedal usually slide off giving you access. Some resistance and electronic foot pedals have screws to remove in order to access the insides of the foot control.

Now we need a tester. There are a few different types that will work. A TVOM, Continuity Tester, Circuit Tester, or Resistance Testeris now needed. Set the tester to test Resistance in Ohms. Place one probe on one wire going to the sewing machine pedal. Place the other probe on the other wire going to my sewing machine pedal. When we press down on the sewing machine pedal, what happens on the meter?

If you have a resistance based foot control, use a TVOM or other tester to check resistance. Check for solid electrical connections.

Retest the foot control by connecting the probes of the meter to the two terminals inside. If there is still no needle action, the sewing machine foot pedal is no good. In rare instances, I can see where a wire has been broken off or some minor problem exists. But in most cases, to Fix the Sewing Machine foot pedal , we need to replace it. - 15246

Pallets are being used more frequently to reduce the amount of manual handling, but it is doing so at the expense of freight. With the cost of rising freight, does this still make sense? As companies consider these factors, here are some examples of when not to palletize.

Companies had a choice to go with pallets that speed up loading and unloading and reduce product damage to goods or to floor load. Clamp trucks were often used to speed loading but because of the damage they created, they were referred to as the squeeze of death as they caused high damage. Pallets became the alternative. They provide a softer approach.

The downside - pallets consume capacity in a truck. A manufacturer of frozen pizzas hand loads all of their trucks. Load maximization is a key cost driver for them. Another redeeming factor is that the cases of pizza are relatively large and light.

You have to take into consideration the pallet weight when determining payload. By removing pallets, you can increase the weight of the product carried. For example, if you have 60 pallets, they weigh over 3,900 lbs and decrease that weight of product by 8%. In many cases, DC replenishment shipments can be more economically shipped without pallets. The extra labor costs associated with palletizing when they are received, are often calculated to be less than the freight savings.

There are numerous costs associated with shipping on the floor (without pallets). Labor can be reduced by the right application of technology. Hand stacking requires intensive labor, which is increased as the case size declines. One type of technology used to cut labor is "slip sheets". This is where the product ships on a large piece of plastic, which is grabbed by a push-pull device and pulled onto the platens of the forklift. It allows the product to be handled with only additional labor required for palletized shipping when that is a customer requirement.

You have to also take into consideration the cost of the pallets. There are many choices - disposable, rented, used, exchange programs. It doesn't matter what you choose, but you do have to include the cost of pallets.

The decision to ship on or off a pallet is a consideration, and more and more Companies are factoring this into their decision making process as they review cost savings against the potential for damage.
