Making the most of Employment Classifieds

By Alex Wu

Every time you turn around, someone else is out of work. Even people with high end jobs that you would have never imagined being without a job are getting let go and finding themselves on unemployment for the first time in their lives. With everyone fighting for the same jobs, how can you get an edge? Employment classified ads are a great way to start!

Usually when you talk about employment classified ads, you get a look that basically says people are not interested in even starting because everyone has access and we are all rushing for the couple of positions that are available. The trick is to work the system in your favor and take advantage of all the different aspects of these employment classified ads.

Let's start with the basic employment classifieds. Your local paper will have them in a couple of editions every week. The Sunday paper is automatic, but most publications are going with at least two times a week now to take advantage of the market. You may also want to either subscribe or go to the library and look at industry specific publications, just about every one of them has added a classified section to help out job seekers during this horrible economic climate.

Now it is time to slide over to the information highway and see what is available. The internet is going to give you access to more employment classified ads than you can ever possibly imagine. These are going to take some time and skill to get through as there are a decent amount of scam artists on there and ads that don't belong in your category, but you will get used to how to get through them after a while. Once you work out the right keywords, you will be flying through them like a seasoned veteran.

While many may not consider job boards like Monster and HCareers employment classified ads, what else would you call them? They are merely one large help wanted ad. This is where you can really spend some time. These sites have everything organized and there are also a ton of industry specific job boards that can help you pinpoint opportunities across the country.

Something you may not have thought about, but need to consider is rummaging through the social networks. While a search here won't be as fruitful as a job board, you will find little treasures here and there by spending some time surfing on their site. Most of these sites also now offer classified sections and there are limited opportunities on there.

Okay, we have been doing reconnaissance to this point, now it is time to go on the offensive. Start doing you own posting! All of but the print ads will allow you to make your own posting for free. You would be surprised how many employers sift through these sites looking for people that are looking for work. A great idea is to start up a blog and create another link where you can have your resume posted and put this link up on a classified or on a social page.

This is basically the same process that is available to you on the job boards. Each and every one of these employment classified sites will allow you to not only post your resume for employers to seek, but you can also have job alerts sent right to you as soon as they become available. Now instead of you doing all the work, the site is working for you and you will only need to go on there when you get an alert that a job meeting your criteria has been posted. - 15246
