This seven character string will tell you several things, such as the class code, product name, group code, or product industry code.

One must also follow the Bio-terrorism Act, more specifically Title III. This act specifies that anyone importing foods into the US must adhere to certain rules. For instance, advance notification must be given to the FDA before a shipment arrives. Logistics companies should also keep substantial records on the food and where it is going to appease the title.

Even with this much discussed, there is a boat-load of information to consider when dealing with food and transportation. As you can see, outsourcing this headache to a third party logistics company is a great idea. Logistics companies will not only handle your burden, but also be responsible should anything go wrong. Not long ago I was contacted by a company that had been unsuccessful in acquiring a new Operating Line of Credit from its bank in Toronto, Canada. The company is in the Import Business.

The company imports goods from China and has been experiencing strong growth over the last year which lead them to outgrow their current Operations Financing and their current Financial Institution would not increase their limit of $50K.

As you may know, the typical terms when dealing with China are 30% payment with the order and the 70% balance before they are shipped.

The sales for the company are $1.5 million per year with typical days sales outstanding of 45 days, which is quite common, and in many industries considered quite good. The average amount in Accounts Receivable is $200,000 so you can see the $50,000 Line of Credit was of little use to them.

In their industry, it is expected that the goods that are ordered by their customers are to be shipped within 7 days which required the Importer to carry inventory as their source of goods was in China.

The owners had tied up their personal assets as much as possible in order to have the cash flow needed to carry the inventory.

My office set the Importer up with a new Operating Line of Credit using their Accounts Receivable as security in a Factoring facility.

Now the company has access to $170,000 for their operations which allowed the owners of the company to pay off the personal loans they had taken for operations, pay off the bank Line of Credit they had and still have sufficient funds to carry the required inventory to service their customers.

Because the new Funding Line was based on outstanding sales, the Line increased as the sales increased. So as sales grew, so did the availability of funds. - 15246

I just made that term up. I throw anything that supports measurements to things like the sales process tactical. Just because someone names a methodology Strategic Selling doesn't make it strategic. Keep in mind that the sales organization derives it's initiatives from a corporate vision. Let's hope it's customer centric!

I find some of the "dashboards" out there to be useless and extremely confusing. They either look like a vintage sports car, or there are so many low level "KPI's" on them that there no better than raw data. Let's be serious. Solutions for effectively monitoring business intelligence should provide information, not raw data. Why would you want to think about what you're looking at? Wouldn't it be better to know either everything's OK, or something is wrong with out having to process data in your head?

The first time I was shown an executive information system was 20 years ago when I was in banking. The simplicity was beautiful. All it had were three simple colored rectangles. Each represented a different area of responsibility. If it was green, everything was cool. If it was yellow, someone was probably already looking into things, but he or she could click for more info. It it was red, heads would probably roll. The key is that the executive trusted these colors.

I like making up headlines like that. Since I consider CRM to be a strategic, customer-centric way of doing business, you should have decided up front what was going to improve and how you were going to measure it. To do this you'll need a means of presenting the results. You might be trying to...

1. Increasing revenues - changing to a customer-centric strategy can raise the rate of new referrals, possibly from word of mouth. You'll want to distinguish these from the rest, so plan for ways to measure it.

2. Reduce costs - when you reduce the friction in the moving parts of your business by realigning information flows to focus on your customers, costs savings are going to occur, especially when you introduce CRM technology to support these process. Your plan should identify these reductions and how you plan to take advantage of them. Measurement of those goals is key to evaluating your success.

3. Gains in profitibility - while creating efficiencies and identifying more profitable product and services mixes are great goals, they key is in planning for ways to measure them so you're not guessing at where you've succeeded and where you need improvement. Most of this could be done in a spreadsheet if absolutely necessary.

4. Reduce lost opportunities - when you lose a customer you've lost an inexpensive future sale. When you're customers get tired of you, there's a reason and if you've addressed it in your plan, it needs to be measured. Prove that your new plan is working, don't work off feelings.

Effective business Intelligence tools can help you measure the goals you've set. They are a horrible waste of money if you don't set goals for your business. The KPI's that come with most of these are focused on periodic accounting benchmarks and have little or no relationship to measuring CRM metrics. There are many domains in data management, and one of the fastest growing is Data Governance. Data Governance allows an organization to implement tight controls and build strong business rules around critical data in a strategic, prioritized, and organized way.

It is important to note that Data Governance should be a program within an organization, not a project. Projects have a defined beginning and end, and data governance is not something that you do and then you are finished and can leave it alone. DG is a recursive and iterative process, where you are continually refining your data, rules, and controls.

The first step in implementing Data Governance is to identify the people that will be working on the program. This will be your core team, often referred to as your Data Governance Office. The Data Governance director should be chosen by management as someone with influence across the organization as well as a strong knowledge of the various data sets used across the organization. The leader should also have the backing and support of management, as executive buy-in is critical to success.

Once the Data Governance Director is identified, a team must be build around this leader. The team will first do the work of identifying what should be in scope. Could all of your organizational data be in scope? Sure, but that is likely a lot of data. It must be broken down into more manageable chunks. For instance, you could choose to focus just on customer demographic data to begin with.

At the same time as the scope is being developed, you can also be working on building the data governance council. The data governance council should be made of of mid or upper management representatives from each department or business area in the organization. They will need to have the power to delegate work to analysts in their areas, but must understand the day-to-day work and be able to raise any data issues they have identified to the rest of the council.

The council will be responsible for assigning their resources with work and research that must be completed for data governance. For instance, if we want to see how customer name is used across the organization, you may assign that to Marketing.
