Soar High in Ohio Craft Shows

By Rick Amorey

Ohio is someplace to dream in; it is the place to take something impossible and mix it up with creativity and ingenuity to make it a reality. The Wright Brothers were in the state of Ohio when they conducted their first experiments on flight. Really, we have come from a line of creative thinkers and doers.

It is this very same line of thought that will assist us in our craftsmaking ventures. We must be urged on to fly ever higher, and to not be hampered by old tired techniques that we use. In this day and age, styles are always changing. People are no longer attracted to the old crafts made over a hundred years ago. But still, many of us still insist that the olden ways were better.

Learn to reach for the stars and create your own unique style of crafted items. Not that I'm saying that we should disregard the old ways entirely; I'm saying we should instead try to imagine these in the new, current styles to fit these modern times. Do not fear what the muse tells you to do. You never know, you may come up with the next trend.

But how do you know if a great, new idea that you have for your crafts will indeed be accepted by the public? The answer is simple, really; all you have to do is attend a few craft shows right here in Ohio. Try out your idea there; if people like it, then it will be bought. Nothing to it, really: Just try and try new concepts, until you find something that the public likes.

Many craftspeople will find this trial and error method appalling, because you will never be able to establish your identity. Of course, I'm not saying that you completely very your style from fair to fair. Instead, be creative while maintaining your signature in your crafts. Keep a little something constant; something that can be identifiable with you. In short, soar high, but know how to land. - 15246
